Challenge

To support the decarbonization of the energy system, stakeholders consider the accommodation of hydrogen (e.g. from Power-to-Gas) in the natural gas grid. There are no existing guidelines for TSOs and DSOs to prepare their natural gas networks and operations for the injection of hydrogen with acceptable consequences. The overall goal is to formulate a set of practical guidelines that enable grid managers to assess the consequences of and mitigating measures for adding hydrogen up to a 30% blend or pure hydrogen. The project focused on all aspects of the gas infrastructure, starting from high-pressure gas networks and low-pressure distribution networks to user equipment and compressors, storage en injection stations. The consortium consists of over 20 international partners from both Europe, Asia, Canada and the US.

DNV's role

• Program coordination and implementation of the guidelines, in collaboration with DBI-GUT
• Literature research, interviews with suppliers and knowledge from the partners to give input to the guidelines
• Building on earlier work performed in the NaturalHy and HIPS project.

The HYREADY guidelines present uniform, impartially prepared and unequivocal guidelines to the market.

The guidelines will support TSO’s and DSO’s to obtain a sound balance between feasible measures and residual risks of hydrogen addition to natural gas.

Delivery

Practical guidelines to support gas TSO’s and DSO’s in preparing their networks and connected end-users for hydrogen addition to natural gas at acceptable risk levels. More in particular “how to” questions will be addressed. The guidelines are published in an interactive wiki environment, accessible for the members.
